What is the Creative Commons License?
The Creative Commons License is a special license made up for media recourses such as images, music, video clips etc. The license became important to all sorts of media creators, to make sure their content is used by their permission or based on the licence conditions only. In fact: If you want to use a media resource which runs under the Creative Commons you have to check which of the Creative Commons licenses the artist is using in particular. After that, please make sure you also follow these conditions.
An example: You download an image, a song or a video and the creator publishes this media under the Creative Commons “CC-BY”. So you can use the material in your media project, but only if you attach his name and the source you got the download from.
This is the deal for most Creative Commons material. You use it for free but you tell your audience where it comes from and who created it. Actually it is quite easy and fair as well.
Different Types of Licenses
The Creative Commons provides different types of licences. Some of them are allowed to be used in private and commercial projects. Some of them don’t. So if you use media under this licence you have to make sure you read carefully what type of licence is attached to it in particular.
These are these types:
- Attribution (CC BY)
- Attribution Share Alike (CC BY-SA)
- Attribution No Derivatives (CC BY-ND)
- Attribution Non-Commercial (CC BY-NC)
- Attribution Non-Commercial Share Alike (CC BY-NC-SA)
- Attribution Non-Commercial No Derivatives (CC BY-NC-ND)
Advantage of the Creative Commons License
The huge advantage of the Creative Commons License is to get rid of all unnecessary paper work and also of time consuming communication. A few years ago, you were pleased to ask before you could use someone’s media objects. But with the Creative Commons License you should ask but you do not have to. This saves a lot of time and the producer’s audience gets the same media objects for their projects. The next huge advantage is the opportunity to setup a link to the artist’s website and the Creative Commons website. You don´t need any paperwork and you do not need any other paper based copyright clearances. For the use of Lino Rise Music, everything you need you can find right here. The advantage of the Creative Commons License is the easy handling for the artist and for the user of the media product.
of the Creative Commons License
A lot of people think the Creative Commons License is a free licence that allows using the music without doing anything. This is a huge misunderstanding and you may get in a highly unpleasant position if you are reported. In an extreme case, you can expect notice form a lawyer because you act illegal. I had some cases where I found my music in videos without attribution. This is not acceptable! I cannot understand this behaviour. It is easy to add my name and my page to a video clip on YouTube, for example.
The second misinterpretation of the Creative Commons license is the deal with paper work. Some people think they have to have some paper work to make sure there is no licensing change coming up. I will not change any of the licenses in the future. There is no way of doing this. Most of the tracks are already licensed under the non attributions license, so there is no need to change anything. But if you want to make sure that the music you are using is save, just make some screenshots of my page and send them to me. I will instantly send them back with some words of acceptance. So please, do not worry too much about it.
NOTE: This Royalty Free Music offer does not change in the future.
